Vinx's New Home: His move to NH and the future of SK

Dear Family,For the Songwriter Soul Kitchen, 2011 ushers in a new look... As many of you know by now, I have left the humid moss of my deep south McRae, Georgia homestead. I have moved to the four seasons of beautiful New Hampshire. My converted barn sits high in a mountain top, lakeside, New England Village. Although my new home is in a quiet picturesque setting I am very near the towns that are considered to be the center of the arts in the region, Peterborough and Keene, NH and Brattleboro, VT. All of our plans that were a challenge in McRae, GA have been embraced with enthusiasm here. We tested our new location with the most recent Soul Kitchen #23 over my birthday weekend and it was a great success. The film scoring exercise featured, “the sensation of sight” an independent film directed by Aaron Wiederspahn http://www.thesensationofsight.com/tag/independent-film . The two teams, produced by Graymation and young Sam Ravenna, did an amazing job marrying song to scene. The final result left the Director and music supervisor, Rupert Thompson, opened-mouthed and gasping for air as they proclaimed…. “unbelievable!” We will definitely do more of this in the future. Earlier I spoke about the local embrace of Soul Kitchen. We held the SUGGAH LIP LOUNGE in a performance space called, the Starving Artist Collective of Keene, NH. The place was full of local folk eager to celebrate the Soul Kitchen Vibe. Maritri, Emily, Poppy and Anasa (first timer) put on a great performance. Local songwriters Jude and Laina joined the weekend and did an amazing job. Our Sonicbids scholarship recipient, Mia Adams (Burlington, Vermont) fell right into the family. I sang and did my thing until Jenn brought out the birthday cake (that was some good-ass cake). We all felt so welcomed and comfortable in our new community. Thank You, Keene.The Barn turned out to be a perfect host with a strong creative safe zone. I will burn more wood for the southerners next time. Maritri did a great job leading The Anatomy of a Song. Newcomer Sal, another Berklee student, became the director of ambience while Jenn and Katy (Emily’s Mom) brought out the hearty tundra soul food. The addition of the extra area musicians Paul (bassist) and Bob (pianist) made this a weekend of effortless magic. D-Black (taco meat) set up a video chat with a song placement company in Beverly Hills so we were able to Q&A with Rodney Gordy, Reginald Brown and other publishers about the process.My barn is a lot smaller than the plantation house so it gave us a chance to get acquainted with the many quaint B&Bs and Inns in the region as well as Historic hotels and cheap motel chains. In the new-look Soul Kitchen only staff will stay in the barn so participants have a wide range of lodging options to choose from. Because of this change, we are altering our fee structure. There will now be one workshop fee of $350, which covers all workshops, lunch and dinner on Friday and Saturday, and a Sunday brunch. Lodging will now be paid out of pocket which gives you a chance to find room mates, bring your families or just plain luxuriate in 4 star comfort if that’s how you roll. The website will be updated to help you find all the recommended B&Bs/Inns/Hotels in the area. If you would like, D Black will help match you with a roommate to make your stay even more cost effective. Transportation is simpler here too…Amtrak to Brattleboro VT, flights to Boston or Manchester NH, MegaBus to Amherst MA or a 4 hr. drive from NYC. Our staff has worked very hard to ensure this geographic relocation will be a smooth and positive transition. We want to inspire you to the greatness of your truth.
